Wed, 02 Dec 2009

Home working a definite option for small firms Individuals who are considering starting a new business should investigate the possibility of working from home, it has been claimed.

According to Business Link, this is "a popular option" for small companies due to the lower costs, lack of a commute and freedom and flexibility involved.

Home business owners can choose the hours they wish to work, in an environment they create for themselves, the support service adds.

It notes that advances in technology mean that many kinds of business can be run from a home base, however people should check that there are no legal restrictions preventing them form doing so.

Business Link explains that in some circumstances, landlords or mortgage lenders may prohibit the use of a home for business purposes, while insurance providers may require higher premiums.

Some home enterprises will qualify for business rates, the service states, while health and safety risk assessments may also need to be conducted.

Meanwhile, individuals who need to make structural changes to their home in order to make it suitable for work could need planning permission, Business Link adds.

According to Andrew Millard, a director of e-commerce at GoToMyPC, home working can enable business owners and employees to increase their productivity.
