Businesses warned of identity fraud risks
Tue, 11 May 2010
Businesses need to be aware of phishing threats on the internet aside from banking, it has been claimed.
According to Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at IT security solutions company Sophos, there are many places from which information including email addresses can be targeted for the purposes of identity theft.
He said people should be aware of "the essential things that drive people to make mistakes, which are fear and sex".
"They are both the old faithfuls when it comes to cybercrime," Mr Cluley commented.
"You either frighten web users into thinking they're losing money, because something bad is happening, or you offer them something salacious."
Such opportunities will continue to increase as more businesses and consumers spend large amounts of their time online, he forecast.
An email scam offering bogus compensation payouts from the Civil Aviation Authority has followed the volcanic ash travel chaos, highlighting an increased use of current events to entice people to give out personal details online.
