Data best practice crucial for small businesses

Businesses must ensure they keep data consistent and avoid duplication if they wish to prevent security breaches, one industry expert has claimed.
Tom Wickham-Jones, director of kernel technology at Wolfram Research, noted that data is very often private and must be treated as such at all times.
He noted that businesses' data can contain information on customers, such as user profiles and history, meaning consistency is key during migration.
Mr Wickham-Jones was speaking at the London Computational Knowledge summit about the issues of publicising, or making it easy to publicise, internal data.
His comments come alongside comments from Hitachi Data Systems that virtualisation is one effective way to store data online during data migration.
Mr Wickman used the example of registering at a bank to highlight potential data security issues.
"You can go to a bank, sign up, become a customer and another part of the bank doesn't know that so bombards you with information - that's a lack of integration problem," he stated.
As more and more data is publicised, Mr Wickham-Jones believes businesses should prepare the ground for multiple datasets in multiple places, helping to eliminate security issues and customer data crossover.
